Deciding Between A Manual and Electric Glass Washer

by Brian C. on March 30, 2010

When you think of a glass washer, what do you envision in your mind? Is it one of those glass washers for pubs that look like a slightly smaller dishwasher, or do picture a set of rotating brushes, sitting in a sink? No matter what you pictured, the chances are that you are correct. ‘Glass washer’ is an umbrella term for a variety of different devices, but they all have one thing in common – they wash glasses!

The kitchen appliance version is sometimes called a commercial glass washer, and these are normally found in large bars or restaurants (we will be ignoring this type in this article). The second kind, an upright glass washer, comes in two versions: manual and electric. A manual washer requires you to turn the glass through a set of bristled rollers, sort of like a miniature car-wash. An electric glass washer does all the turning for you, so you can just hold the glass in place and let the machine do the work.
So what are the advantages of each? Here is a comparison:

• Throughput: An electric washer is a lot faster at cleaning glasses than the manual version, since the electric motor spins the brushes a lot fast than you could twist a glass.
• Price: A manual washer is really cheap in relation to its electric cousin. If you are looking for one for glass washer for home use only, and you only have a few glasses, then the manual version is the one to buy.
• Servicing: Electric washers have lots of moving parts, so they inevitably break down at some point. Obviously manual washers don’t have this problem!

So which is the best? If you are really lazy and can afford one, an electric washer makes the tedious task of washing glasses a lot simpler. Manual glass washers are great for their price, but you still have to do a little bit of scrubbing on stubborn stains. Ask yourself the question: “what do you value more – time or money?”
